A musician is a project manager. A producer is a project manager. A band leader is a project manager.

Everyone has heard the term "Project Manager", but do we all really understand the value of project management in our business of music?

This course will expose participants to the fundamentals of project management and how they directly apply to the music industry. You will learn what role a project manager plays on a project, when to consider adding a project manager to YOUR project and what roles a project manager should perform when added to the team. We'll even dive into real-world examples of when a project manager was pulled onto a team resulting in a significant contribution to the team's success.

At the end of the course, we will engage in a fun group activity displaying the advantages of having a Project Manager on your team!

Participants will:

  • Learn different aspects, the importance of and the skill sets of project management.

  • Observe real-world examples when a project manager was pulled into a project and made a significant contribution.

  • Understand when they should considering adding a project manager to a project.

  • Learn about various project management software on the market and when they should be considered for use.


Alex Ellis '13 is a Senior Manager at Universal Music Group working on multiple projects in the Process Innovation and Advance Operations division. After receiving a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and working at an engineering consulting firm for over a decade in various management roles, Alex obtained his Masters Certificate in Music Business and decided it was time for a career change. Before working at UMG, Alex performed various roles at independent record label The Record Machine, while also assisting with the label's large music festival Middle of the Map Fest. In his spare time, Alex enjoys writing original songs and scores for indie films.
